A Better Mental & Behavioral Health Care System

Spartanburg has incredible assets — including mental and behavioral health centers, hospital systems and community-based providers — but we are not yet working together in a way that ensures the best care for mental and behavioral health patients. VITAL Spartanburg is addressing these issues head-on, working in collaboration with existing providers, practitioners and volunteers to identify and close critical gaps, strengthen existing programs that work, and fund new services where needed.

"Being a part of this VITAL movement will allow us at SAMHC to meet patients where they are with a total care. We are committed to this solution for a healthier community."

Dr. Ebony Gaffney, Director — Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center

Mental Health Care for All Communities, from All Providers

A key aspect of VITAL Spartanburg is integrating mental healthcare in more aspects of patient care. Practitioners in the field will be encouraged and empowered to discuss mental health topics and address substance abuse issues beyond just a clinical setting. VITAL Spartanburg supports, expands or establishes programs:

bullet points
  • In primary care for pregnant women and new parents, beginning with pediatric and OB pilots
  • Among community health workers serving mothers
  • In post-natal home visit and parenting programs
  • In schools, via universal screening and expanded support programs, including afterschool and summer care
  • In detention centers and community health clinics, offering Increased access to treatment for people with SUD or SMI
  • Among first responders caring for people with SUD or SMI
  • Among mobile and satellite efforts to support unhoused people, those in transition, or those in SUD crisis

We will continue to work with providers and organizations to ensure a continuum of care that best supports patients, delivers prevention messaging, and offers accessible treatment for all communities.
